Tottori Shan Shan Festival
Tottori’s summer tradition - an umbrella mass dance involving about 3,000 participants!
Held annually from August 13 to 15 in the heart of Tottori City, this is the most famous summer festival of Tottori Prefecture.
The main event is a gorgeous umbrella dance based on the local traditional performance, Inaba no Kasa Odori, adapted to make it easier for everyone to join in. Around 3,000 dancers fill the venue, holding colorful umbrellas and dancing in unison as they make the bells jingle. The spectacle is truly a breathtaking one.
The festival's name, “Shan Shan,” derives from the pleasant sounds of hot springs bubbling up and the bells on the umbrellas used in the dance.
In 2014, the event achieved a Guinness World Record for the largest umbrella dance, and has since become a festival that attracts attention both in Japan and abroad.
