Yumura Fire Festival
A traditional event full of fantasy, woven together by flames and prayers
Yumura Fire Festival, a traditional event that has been taking place in Yumura Onsen in the northern part of Hyogo Prefecture since the late 18th century, is held on August 24 every year. This festival is a valuable event that preserves the history and culture of the region, and it has been designated as an intangible folk cultural property of the town.
On the day of the festival, along both banks of the Haruki River that flows through Yumura Onsen town, local children and tourists come together, chanting the unique refrain of “Jirombo, Tarombo, mugi no naka no kurombo” as they vigorously swing the fire torches (now torchlight sticks) they hold in their hands. Under the night sky, countless flames carrying wishes for purification of body and soul shimmer magically on the surface of the Haruki River, enveloping the town in a special atmosphere never seen in a usual hot spring town. With a torch in hand, join the local children and create unforgettable memories of a Japanese summer.
