Lantern Festival at Cemetery of the Ikeda family
Venue: National Historic Site, Cemetery of the Ikeda family, feudal lords of Tottori domain
The cemetery of the Ikeda family, influential feudal lords who used to rule this region, is a historical burial site of the Ikeda family. More than 260 lanterns surround the 78 tombstones of 11 generations of feudal lords and their families dating from 1693. As the cemetery of one of Japan’s most famous feudal lord families, the site has been designated as a national historic site.
Every year during the illumination period of the autumn foliage season in late November, a one-day-only Lantern Festival is held. This traditional Japanese event honors ancestors, with numerous lanterns lit simultaneously to create a magical scene. Traditional Japanese performances are also dedicated, offering a rare opportunity to experience the deep history and culture of the region.
