Hamasaka Minato Firefly Squid Festival
A spring-only event where you can enjoy fresh firefly squid to your heart’s content
This gourmet event, which heralds the arrival of spring, is held in early April every year. The venue, Hamasaka Port in northern Hyogo Prefecture, boasts the largest catch of hotaru ika (firefly squid) in Japan.
The highlight of the festival is the dynamic “kamaage” event. It is an impressive sight, watching large quantities of firefly squid being lifted by cranes and boiled in a huge pot measuring 1.5 m in diameter. There are also various other items on the menu that you can sample, including grilled firefly squid on skewers and firefly squid sushi. A unique event is also held, where participants compete to eat as many firefly squid as possible within a time limit. Be sure to savor the spring flavor of fresh firefly squid at this event.
