Kawasuso Festival / Hamasaka Furusato Summer Festival Fireworks Display
One of three major festivals in Tajima, northern Hyogo Prefecture, when fireworks illuminate the night sky
Kawasuso Festival, held over three days in mid-July at Utsuno Shrine, is one of the three major festivals of the Tajima region in northern Hyogo Prefecture. It is said to have begun during the mid-Edo period (late 17th to late 18th century), with strong influence from the famous Gion Festival in Kyoto.
The main attractions of the festival are the mikoshi (portable shrines) parading through the town and the Kirin-jishi Mai, a form of lion dance. The Kirin-jishi is a lion unique to this region, with the head of the mythical creature kirin that has a single horn. It has been designated as an intangible folk cultural property of the prefecture. The festival prays for safety in the home through an unusual format that involves two dancers holding the head and tail of the lion and dancing gracefully while leading the mikoshi.
On the middle day, the Hamasaka Furusato Summer Festival Fireworks Display is held, and around 3,000 bursts of fireworks are sent up to illuminate the night sky. The town is lined with food stalls and bustles with many local residents and tourists. Experience a traditional Japanese summer and its lively ambience.
