Ishitani Residence
A mansion that combines a rich history with beautiful craftsmanship
This merchant house, which has been standing since the Edo period about 400 years ago, is the vast residence of the Ishitani family, who amassed their fortune through forestry businesses. Erected on impressive grounds spanning about one hectare, it features architectural beauty that incorporates high-quality wood crafted by exceptional artisanal skills, as well as a beautiful garden that changes its appearance with the seasons.
It underwent extensive renovations from the 17th to the 20th centuries, blending architectural styles from various eras and earning it the designation as an Important Cultural Property of Japan.
In addition to the main house with over 40 rooms, three of the seven storehouses are open to the public as galleries, showcasing seasonal rotations of artworks from the Ishitani family's collection and works by local artists. Various interesting events are also held in the spacious earthen-floored hall and tatami-mat rooms.
