Tajima Daibutsu, Chorakuji Temple
The three wooden Buddha statues, among the largest in the world, are an impressive sight!
Chorakuji Temple, with a history of 1,200 years, was founded by the renowned Buddhist monk Gyoki, who contributed to the development of bridges and roads as well as the spread of Buddhism.
The main highlight is the Tajima Daibutsu, a giant Buddha statue enshrined in the Daibutsu-den (Great Buddha Hall). Standing at 15.8 meters tall, it is one of the largest Buddha statues in the world, and a thin layer of gold leaf has been applied over the wooden sculptures. The three massive Buddha statues seated side by side makes for an impressive sight, and their dazzling golden glow is unparalleled in beauty. These great Buddhas were crafted by over 20,000 artisans in China over a period of three years.
The vast temple grounds feature a splendid main gate and a five-story pagoda, a symbol of Buddhism. Here, visitors can feel the richness of Japan's history and the grandeur of Buddhist art amid the serene surroundings.
