Shikano Castle Ruins

An attractive streetscape full of historical romance

This is the former site of a castle erected by the Kamei family who were samurais renowned as strategists. Built about 400 years ago during the samurai era, the stones at the summit, the inner moat, and the outer moat walls still retain traces of their original appearance. The ruins of the Tenshu (keep) offers a panoramic view of the Sea of Japan. As Shikano was a military stronghold, the area incorporates many T-shaped and L-shaped roads with carefully designed access routes to the castle. The streets are lined with many Kyoto-style houses, and the charming atmosphere of a traditional castle town has been carefully preserved even to the present day.

In spring, Shikano Castle Ruins is renowned as a scenic spot where approximately 500 cherry trees bloom. In autumn, about 600 maple trees along the approach to Mt. Myoken on the south side take on vibrant hues, attracting visitors to this easy hiking course. The snowy landscape in winter also has a special charm that captivates many.
