Wakasa Onigajo Ruins
A castle that powerful leaders of the past wanted to acquire
Wakasa Onigajo, built on Mt. Tsuruo (elevation 452 m) in Wakasa Town, was a mountain fortress that once flourished as a hub positioned along a major road. Constructed around 1200, it served as a strategic base in eastern Tottori Prefecture until its abandonment in 1617.
Although the castle itself is no longer standing, the stone walls from the time and other precious structural ruins not seen in other castles have led to its designation as a national historic site.
It is possible to drive along a forest road to a point near the ruins, and the summit offers visitors sweeping views of mountain villages, often described as a quintessential Japanese landscape. Soak up the views of cherry blossoms in spring, and of beautiful red leaves in autumn. You can also hike up from the base, but the path is narrow and rugged so hiking shoes and appropriate clothing are recommended.
