[Tottori Castle Ruins] Ninomaru

The castle ruins, spread across the foot of Mt. Kyusho (with an altitude of 263 m), have retained the form of the Tottori 320,000 Koku Castle erected during the Edo period. Within these ruins, the Ninomaru, standing at an elevation of 37 m, once housed the palace of Tottori Domain's lord. A three-story turret (approximately 18 m tall) stood on a higher stone wall as a symbol of the Tottori domain. After the Tenshu at the summit of Mt. Kyusho was burnt and destroyed by lightning, this turret has served as its replacement. It is one of the largest three-story, three-tiered structures in Japan.

In spring, it becomes a famous viewing spot for cherry blossoms, and is also a popular location with panoramic views overlooking Tottori City.

[Tottori Castle Ruins] Tenkyumaru and Maki-ishigaki

Tenkyumaru is the name of the site that was developed on the grounds of the ruins, where a woman named Tenkyu-in once lived.

Maki-ishigaki refers to the spherical stone walls constructed to support the stone walls of Tenkyumaru. These spherical stone walls were built around 1807 to prevent the rear stone walls from uplift that could lead to collapse. Stone walls that are shaped like a sphere are unique to this site among castles nationwide and are extremely rare.

Jinpukaku, Hosen-an, and Horyuin Tei'en

A beautiful, white Western-style building perfectly matched with the Japanese garden

[Notice of extended closure of Jinpukaku]

Jinpukaku will be closed for an extended period until around 2029 for conservation and repair works on the cultural property. During this period, the Horyuin Tei'en garden and Hosen-an, located within the grounds, will remain open to the public.

Jinpukaku is a beautiful French Renaissance-style mansion constructed on the site of the former Tottori Castle. Built in 1907 using the most advanced technology of the time, it has been designated a National Important Cultural Property.

It is known as the place where the Emperor of Japan of the Taisho period (1912–1916) stayed while he was still the Crown Prince, and the interiors of the house from that period are on display. The column-free spiral staircase is a rare feature worldwide and demonstrates the high level of architectural skill of the time.

Horyuin Tei'en is a Japanese garden where visitors can stroll around a pond while appreciating the beauty landscape. In one corner of the garden stands the tea house Hosen-an, a valuable building that is the only surviving structure from Tottori Castle.

Jinpukaku, together with the nearby Kyusho Park, known for its lovely cherry blossoms and autumn foliage, attracts many tourists.
