Townscape around Shikano Castle
A town that has preserved the beautiful townscapes of Japan from long ago
The castle town of Shikano was developed in the late 1500s and grew to become a post town along the San’in-do, a road connecting Kyoto and Yamaguchi along the Sea of Japan. The town is lined with traditional Japanese private homes converted into cafes and gift shops, and clear spring water continues to flow through the waterways built across the town even after 400 years. At night, the merchant-style buildings are illuminated by lanterns, creating a historic and charming atmosphere.
Nearby, the Shikano Castle Ruins Park is a popular spot where about 500 cherry trees bloom in spring and fireflies dance in the air during early summer.
