Koyasan Shingon Sect Daijoji Temple

Encounter beautiful artworks that look like they belong in an art gallery

This historic temple was established in 745 by Gyoki, a famous Buddhist monk who engaged in social work for the people and spread Buddhism. Also known as “Okyo-dera," the temple has been designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan, and features 165 fusuma-e (sliding panel paintings) as its highlight. Fusuma are traditional Japanese sliding doors, and the paintings on these panels were created by the Edo-period painter Maruyama Okyo and his disciples around the 1700s. Maruyama's depictions of tigers, peacocks, and natural landscapes are truly breathtaking.

The temple grounds are surrounded by ancient trees estimated to be around 1,200 years old, creating a solemn atmosphere. Visitors can also enjoy cultural experiences such as copying sutras (sha-kyo), copying Buddhist paintings (sha-butsu), and renting kimono to wear. Enjoy this invaluable experience of Japan’s beauty and spirituality.
