Chizu Riverside Sakura Cafe Festival

Revel in the joys of spring in a 1,300-meter tunnel of cherry blossoms

The banks of Sendai River, which flows through Chizu Town, are lined with approximately 130 Somei Yoshino cherry trees that cover a distance of about 1,300 m to create an area known locally as the “Sakura Dote” ("cherry blossom embankment"). Somei Yoshino is a beautiful variety of cherry blossoms, and the most well-known in Japan. When the cherry blossoms are in full bloom every spring, the riverbanks are transformed into a beautiful tunnel of cherry blossoms.

On the stage set up along the riverside, energetic dances such as the Yosakoi Odori, originating from Kochi Prefecture, are performed, adding to the exciting and festive atmosphere. Food stalls offering local delicacies also line the area. In the snowy town of Chizu, the long-awaited arrival of spring after a long winter marks a special ocassion. This is a major event that draws many people every year as they gather to share the joys of spring.
