Mochigase Nagashibina event

A traditional event to pray for the healthy growth of children

Hina Matsuri (Girl’s Day) is a festival held on March 3 every year to pray for the growth and happiness of girls. In each household, elaborate Hina ningyo (hina dolls), modeled after the wedding of the former emperor and empress, are displayed, and prayers are offered for the healthy growth of children.

In Mochigase Town, a beautiful traditional event called “Nagashibina” is held every year on the 3rd day of the 3rd month of the lunar calendar (currently late March to late April). Children don beautiful kimono and float paper dolls of a man and woman down the river to pray for good health and safety. This ritual originates from the old practice of transferring misfortune onto dolls and letting them float away with the water, and it has now become a rare and valuable tradition unique to Mochigase Town.

On the day of the event, hina dolls passed down through generations are displayed in various private homes throughout the town, offering an opportunity to experience Japan's traditional culture up close.
