Tottori Folk Crafts Museum Annex, Lake Koyama Amida-do

Lake Koyama Amida-do is an annex of the Tottori Folk Crafts Museum and designated as a National Tangible Cultural Property. The building was constructed in 1964 by Shoya Yoshida as a facility to enjoy the natural beauty of Lake Koyama. The three islands visible through the windows are likened to the Amida Sanzon, which is where the name was derived from. The Amida Sanzon refers to three Buddha divinities are important symbols in Japanese Buddhist art.

This Amida-do has been visited by people deeply involved in folk crafts, such as ceramic artist Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada.

[About Shoya Yoshida]
Shoya Yoshida was born in Tottori City in 1898. While studying medicine, he joined the folk craft movement and later worked as a doctor while guiding the creation of new designs for Ushinotoyaki pottery, contributing to the popularization of folk craft ceramics. He also supported various crafts such as woodworking and metalworking, and developed systems for their distribution and consumption. For his work, he is referred to as the “father of the Tottori folk craft movement.”
