What Is a Kirin!? The Mythical Beast That Brings Happiness to the “Land of Wind”
The Kirin, a mythical beast symbolizing peace, has been passed down through Chinese tradition.
It is said to have descended upon Inaba during the Edo period, as part of a festival held by the ruling Ikeda clan.
Eventually, the Kirinjishi-mai—a lion dance modeled after the Kirin—was born and passed down to the Tajima region as well.
This tradition has been preserved through festivals and annual events, thanks to the dedication of local communities.
It is a dance of happiness from the “Land of Wind,” performed to pray for safety through harsh winters and to give thanks for the joys of spring.
On the day the Kirin Lion Dances, people gather together, share meals, and celebrate with joy.
